His son is now in Congress as a representative from Illinois, but the father ran for president many times in the 1980s. Although he never won, he helped increase voter registration and lobbied for minority issues. In 1971, he started Operation PUSH to improve conditions for African Americans. In the 1990 Persian Gulf crisis, he went to Iraq and to help negotiate the release of hostages.
